Our Little Outdoor Classroom aims to promote positive behaviour strategies as a way of dealing with inappropriate behaviour. Praise and encouragement will be given by all members of staff to children of all ages attending the classroom, although it will be tailored to the child’s age and development. All staff will follow the same procedures when dealing with inappropriate behaviour as this will set down a consistent approach that the children will understand. From that, children attending the classroom will all understand what is expected of them.
Behaviour Management Procedure
Day-Care
Staff will be working closely with the children and observing them at all times, therefore staff should be able to identify and anticipate any potential challenges regarding behaviour. Members of staff would aim to intervene and manage the situation before inappropriate behaviour was demonstrated. If however inappropriate behaviour is displayed the following procedures would take place:
A verbal instruction will be given explaining why the behaviour is not appropriate.
If the behaviour continues, the child will be given a further warning, explaining that if the behaviour continues they child will be asked to leave the activity.
If the child has to be told three times that his/her behaviour is inappropriate, the member of staff will follow through with their decision ie removing the child from the activity. The child will have to find an alternative activity to take part in.
If persistent inappropriate behaviour is being displayed within the classroom, parents will have to be informed and a collaborative approach will be decided.
School Visits
Positive behaviour strategies will also be adopted when children attend the classroom as part of a school visit. And the above procedures will also be followed. However, ultimately the responsibility of managing inappropriate behaviour falls on the teacher(s) organising the visit.
